The Madagascar beans are coming! These were shelle The Madagascar beans are coming! These were shelled too early from a damaged pod - but aren’t they just so pretty before they fully dry out? #thinkingaboutthembeans #subtropicalpermaculture
The bean trial is going well, fingers crossed the The bean trial is going well, fingers crossed the coming rain doesn’t rot them all. Attempting to grow a bunch of drying beans for storable future protein sources. Beans are one of the best options for shelf stable protein. What are you planting at the moment in this third(!) consecutive La Niña?
In winter, the front yard is the most productive s In winter, the front yard is the most productive spot due to sun availability. Filled with greens, herbs and flowers, it’s a pretty and productive patch. Have you avoided growing food in your front yard so far? If yes, what’s holding you back? #ripupthelawn #growcommunity
We collect weeds for the goats to eat every mornin We collect weeds for the goats to eat every morning. These ‘browsings’ include Chinese elm, Lucaena and African pepper tree - some particularly bad environmental weeds growing in the village here. So we’re slowly removing them from the natural spaces, allowing the native trees and shrubs the space to grow. And feeding Curly and Amara in the process! #theproblemisthesolution #nosuchthingaswaste

Needed to wash some saved trombocino seeds today. Needed to wash some saved trombocino seeds today. They were covered in over ripe pulp and and stringy pumpkin flesh. Noticed one of our old onion bags that we use for scrubbing animal water buckets hanging over the tap - it worked perfectly! Now to dry them without the rats and possums and birds finding them… #usewhatyouhave #thinkoutsidethebag

Established another section of the food forest tod Established another section of the food forest today. Early autumn sun is still pretty intense so installed a little shade while the new fruit trees get established. There’s a madrono mangosteen, a white sapote and a grumichama in there. They are under planted with sweet potato and pinto peanut as ground cover crops. Still to add a coffee and a dwarf lychee. Might be asking a little too much of the backyard, but it will be lush! #foodforest #eatlocal #tropicalfruit

The channel billed cuckoo and its crow foster pare The channel billed cuckoo and its crow foster parent just announced their evening meal time with much noise. So time for me to head inside and make mine. I hope everyone is staying safe and getting some garden time this week. It’s an odd place out in the real world right now. #birdwatching #gardeningaustralia #suburbanfarming

We’ve planted extra turmeric alongside the red arrowroot and used mulch from the massive pile of sticks I’d collected. These two beds fill an under-utilised area of the garden and help absorb any nutrient rich run off from the adjacent chicken coop. Plus, bonus chop and drop mulch and turmeric! #usetheedges #permacultureprinciples #nowaste
